When Otto the Great Horned Owl started destroying one of his perches, I came up with the perfect plan. Or so I thought. He had begun tearing at the astroturf on his mailbox-shaped perch. The destruction was causing me to replace the mat nearly weekly, which took time out of my day and I also lamented the cost of each new mat. Finally I decided to wrap a section of rope around the end of the perch so he couldn't tear up the mat in his preferred work area.
When I checked on him the next morning, the rope was still perfectly intact. Unfortunately he decided to turn his attention to the other end of the perch. A chunk of turf was already ripped off. I rolled my eyes and huffed a bit as I pulled the perch out to make the necessary repairs. This time, I wrapped rope around both ends. We'll see if that helps protect the perch, my sanity, and our budget!
