Carson and the Protractor

Carson and Aldo visit the vet for annual check-ups, just like we visit the doctor for an annual physical. These visits are particularly important to track preexisting conditions like the arthritis in Carson's injured wing.

A veterinarian measures Carson's wing extension during her annual exam.

She wasn't due for radiographs this year, but the vets at The Raptor Center have other ways to check her wing health. Carson's original injury was a poorly-healed fracture near her elbow, which limits how much she can move that wing. During her exam, the veterinarian took Carson's left wing and used a protractor to measure how far that joint could extend. It reached about a 100° angle, similar to last year's measurement. That is a good sign that the arthritis in that elbow has not progressed.
