MuseumMobile

I felt butterflies in my stomach as I pulled into the Solon Springs Elementary School parking lot Monday morning. It was my first day teaching MusemMobile programs and I was a little nervous. After checking in at the office, I peeked at my schedule for the day and was relieved to see a 4th grade class first on the list. The topic for 4th grade? Owls.

Well that's too easy, I thought. Heck, my first day on the job at the Museum wasn't in the office six years ago; I was swept off by the interns to teach a raptor program at Spider Lake. If there's one topic I'm comfortable with, it's raptors!

The 45-minute visit went smoothly as we talked about raptor adaptations, owl hearing and silent flight, and what scientists can learn from an owl pellet. Then it was fun to let the students dissect pellets on their own. One boy was heard saying, "This is a dream come true for me!" Even the girls that squealed and claimed that they wouldn't touch owl puke wanted to take a few bones home at the end of the activity.
