Deer Trails

It is already proving to be a tough winter this year. With knee-deep snow falling before Thanksgiving and a handful of nights seeing sub-zero temperatures, it can be a difficult time to be a wild animal. Our education birds are lucky to have protected mews and the option to come indoors on the coldest nights. But the deer in Cable seem to be taking any shortcuts they can. I spied a deer path hugging the front edge of the mew building where the snow might be a bit shallower, a slightly easier place to walk. Though the snow might be just an inch or two lower there, every little bit can help a deer save energy.

This snowy buck was caught slogging through deep snow on the trail camera at Wayside Wanderings Natural Play Area.
