A birder's favorite abbreviation at this time of year is FOY: First Of Year. As the migrants return, I was excited to see my FOY osprey last week and hear my FOY hermit thrush's flute-like song just the other day. Spring is a time of many other firsts, too. I relished spotting my FOY mining bees foraging on a willow last weekend in the Twin Cities.
The raptor flock at the Museum is experiencing their own firsts of spring. The return of bath pans is perhaps a favorite. Aldo and Carson were so excited for their FOY bath this week that they both hopped to the pan before I had a chance to fill it with water. Once filled, they were happy to get their feet wet, clean off their beaks, and splash around.
