A pair of American Robins built a nest once again this year near the Museum's front door. Students visiting during field trips and our volunteer docents have enjoyed watching the birds gather mouthfuls of worms in the front yard and deliver them to babies in the nest.
On one sunny morning, I thought it would be nice to bring Aldo the American Kestrel out to enjoy the sun. We wandered through the backyard, around the building, and I found a comfortable seat out front. Our peaceful basking didn't last long, however.
One robin parent, and then two, perched on street signs in front of us and chirped harshly through the worms in their mouths. Then one suddenly took flight straight toward Aldo, the tiny predator threatening their nest. At the last moment, the robin banked and narrowly missed a collision. Both Aldo and I jumped and the robin soon came at us again.
We made a hasty retreat to the back yard so we could all have a more relaxing time outside.
